Mayor Bowser has a plan to address D.C.’s rise in crime. It involves more police and greater police powers. Your experience with the police may suggest that this might not be the best way to go. Let the mayor and the city council know how you feel about this issue. Tell your story on videotape at the below locations today and tomorrow!!!
I love your articles… but with this article, if I had to choose, I would say, More Police. My reason being, DC have so much to offer to our residence with free training classes, UDC classes, libraries, transportation, etc. I would have to say the resources is there. We just can not make someone or people utilize them.
Now, why I would say more police… crime is going up. We need better control over our youth. Sad to say, the youth (not all but too many) are out of control on the buses, trains, out in the streets. We do not need police brutality but we do need their presents to make DC (regardless of what Ward you live in) much safer, because right now the streets are not safe.
Hello Tori,
I agree with your comment. It’s well-reasoned and I appreciate that. I believe if the police behave professionally they can help people feel safe and are more likely to get community support. But I also worry that the unemployment rate is way too high and graduation rates are way too low. I think both of those problems contribute to a high crime rate. I don’t like the idea of throwing good money after bad, but something needs to be done about these problems. They are too big to simply say the problem is just because young Black men don’t have the moral fortitude to pick themselves up by the bootstraps. That’s true for some but not all. A lot of the unemployed and the underemployed, etc, are good people but they’re still can’t get it together. There should be some way to use our resources to make a difference for those people. I’m not sure what that is, but I really think we should try and figure it out. Thanks again for your comment.
