The Re-Imagining Community Screening and Public Education Series
While all of the media Grassroots DC produces is distributed via social media and our website GrassrootsDC.org, the documentaries we produce are also used as the basis for public education events within libraries, public housing communities, churches and schools. We are currently screening three award-winning documentaries in our Re-Imagining Community Screening and Public Education Series.
Incompatible Allies: Black Lives Matter, March For Our Lives and the U.S. Debate About Guns and Violence
In response to the enthusiasm generated by the March For Our Lives, the largest anti-gun violence demonstration in the nation’s history, Grassroots DC, produced a documentary that features Black student activists in the District of Columbia. Working in conjunction with Black Lives Matter-DC, our aim was to capture the experiences Black youth have with gun violence and their perspectives on gun violence prevention and community safety.

Triggered: Street Harassment and Rape Culture in D.C.’s Ward 8
It seemed like a simple request, to be treated with respect as you go about your business–walking to work, to school, to the store, etc. But when a group of African-American women in an under-resourced neighborhood of the District of Columbia asked to be treated with respect by the men in their community tempers flared. The men, with a minority of exceptions, were simply not having it. To the surprise of event organizers, neither were many of the women. In the end, everyone was so “triggered” that the police were called to sort things out. Did the arrival of the authorities help? Watch and see.

Back Burner Dreams: A Woman’s Power Project
Former Grassroots DC media student Brenda Hayes created BackBurner Dreams to encourage women to envision a life for themself where their dreams were actualized and manifested before them. Backburner strives to have women not only imagine, but aim to achieve a life where their long-held goals, passions and dreams are taken off of the “back burner” and pursued.
